Śrī Hanumān Cālisā

Tulasīdās

श्रीगुरु चरण सरोजरज, निजमन मुकुर सुधार ।

बरणौ रघुवर बिमल यश, जो दायक फलचार ॥

śrī guru caraṇa saroja raja, nijamana mukura sudhār

baraṇau raghuvara bimala yaśa, jo dāyaka phalacār

After cleaning the mirror of my mind with the dust of Śrī Guru’s lotus feet, I describe the spotless glory of Śrī Rāma, the supreme in the Raghu dynasty and the giver of the Four Fruits.

बुद्धिहीन तनु जानिके, सुमिरौ पवन कुमार ।

बल बुद्धि विद्या देहु मोहिं, हरहु कलेश विकार ॥

buddhihīna tanu jānike, sumirau pavana kumār,

bala buddhi vidyā dehu mohi, harahu kaleśa vikār

Recognizing myself as lacking in wisdom, I pray to Śrī Hanumān, the son of Wind: Give me strength, wisdom and knowledge, and remove the blemishes in my heart.


जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुण सागर । जय कपीस तिहुँ लोक उजागर ॥ १

jai hanumāna gyān guṇa sāgar, jai kapīsa tihu loka ujāgar

1. Praise to Hanumān, the ocean of wisdom and virtue! Praise to the lord of the monkeys, the enlightener of the three worlds!


रामदूत अतुलित बल धामा । अंजनि-पुत्र पवन-सुत नामा ॥ २

rāmadūta atulita bala dhāmā, anjani-putra pavana-suta nāmā

2. You are the messenger of Śrī Rāma and filled with incomparable strength. Son of Añjanā, you are also known as the son of Pavana (wind).


महाबीर बिक्रम बजरंगी । कुमति निवार सुमति के संगी ॥ ३

mahābīr bikrama bajarangī, kumati nivāra sumati ke sangī

3. You are a great hero of exceptional valor with a body as strong as the thunderbolt. You destroy wicked thoughts and usher good thoughts.


कंचन बरण बिराज सुबेशा । कानन कुंडल कुंचित केशा ॥ ४

kañcana baraṇa birāja subeśā, kānana kuṇḍala kuñcita keśā

4. Your complexion is golden. You look beautiful with your exquisite clothes, earrings and curly hair.


हाथ बज्र औ ध्वजा बिराजै । काँधे मूँज जनेऊ साजै ॥ ५

hātha bajra au dhvajā birājai, kāñdhe mūñja janeū sājai

5. You have a thunderbolt mace in one hand and a flag in the other, and across your shoulder is the sacred thread made of muñjā grass.


शंकर सुवन केशरी नन्दन । तेज प्रताप महा जग वंदन ॥ ६

śankara suvana keśari nandana, teja pratāpa mahā jaga vandana

6. You are the incarnation of Śiva and the son of Keśarī. You are adored by the entire world for your power and valor.


विद्यावान गुणी अति चातुर । राम काज करिबे को आतु्र ॥ ७

Vidyāvān guṇī ati cātura, rāma kāja karibe ko ātura

7. You are intelligent, exemplary and supremely wise—and always eager to do Śrī Rāma’s work.


प्रभु चरित्र सुनिबे को रसिया । राम लखन सीता मन बसिया ॥ ८

prabhu caritra sunibe ko rasiyā, rāma lakhan sītā mana basiyā

8. You love listening to events from Śrī Rāma’s life. You have installed Śrī Rāma, Śrī Sīta and Śrī Lakṣmaṇa in your heart.


सूक्ष्म रूप धरि सियहिं दिखावा । विकट रूप धरि लंक जरावा ॥ ९

sūkṣma rūpa dhari siyahi dikhāva, vikaṭa rūpa dhari lanka jarāvā

9. You appeared before Śrī Sītā in a sublime form. You burnt the city of Laṅkā after assuming a formidable form.


भीम रूप धरि असुर सँहारे । रामचन्द्र के काज सँवारे ॥ १०

bhīma rūpa dhari asura sañhāre, rāmacandra ke kāja sañvāre

10. You destroyed the demons assuming a gigantic form and accomplished the task of Śrī Rāma.


लाय सजीवन लखन जियाये । श्री रघुवीर हरषि उर लाये ॥ ११

lāya sajīvana lakhana jiyāye, śrī raghuvīra haraṣi ura lāye

11. When you brought the sañjīvani herb to revive Lakṣmaṇa, Śrī Rāma embraced you joyfully.


रघुपति कीन्हि बहुत बडाई । तुम मम प्रिय भरत हि सम भाई ॥ १२

raghupati kīnhi bahuta baḍāī, tuma mama priya bharata hi sama bhāī

12. Śrī Rāma praised you greatly and said that you are as dear a brother to him as Bharata.


सहस बदन तुम्हरो यश गावैं । अस कहि श्रीपति कण्ठ लगावैं ॥ १३

sahasa badan tumharo yaśa gāvai, asa kahi śripati kaṇṭha lagāvai

13. Embracing you, Śrī Rāma said to you that the Thousand-headed Serpent (Śeṣanāga) sings your glory.


सनकादिक ब्रह्मादि मुनीशा । नारद शारद सहित अहीशा ॥ १४

sanakādika brahmādi munīśā, nārada śārada sahita ahīśā

यम कुबेर दिगपाल जहाँ ते । कवि कोविद कहि सकैं कहाँ ते ॥ १५

yama kubera digapāla jahañ te, kavi kovida kahi sakai kahañ te

14-15. The sages Sanaka and others, Brahmā and the other deities, Śiva, Nārada, goddess Sarasvati, the King of the Serpents (Śeṣanāga), Yama, Kubera, the guardian deities, poets, and scholars—all have failed to describe you.


तुम उपकार सुग्रीव हिं कीन्हा । राम मिलाय राजपद दीन्हा ॥ १६

tuma upakāra sugrīva kīnhā, rāma milāya rājapada dīnhā

16. You did a favor to Sugrīva by introducing him to Śrī Rāma and restoring him to the throne.


तुम्हरो मन्त्र बिभीषण माना । लंकेश्वर भये सब जग जाना ॥ १७

tumharo mantra bibhīṣaṇa mānā, laṅkeśvara bhaye saba jaga jānā

17. Bibhīṣaṇa accepted your advice and became well-known in the world as the king of Laṅkā.


युग सहस्र योजन पर भानू । लील्यो ताहि मधुर फल जानू ॥ १८

yuga sahasra yojana para bhānū, līlyo tāhi madhura phala jānū

18. Imagining it to be a sweet fruit, you grasped the sun, which is thousands of miles away.


प्रभु मुद्रिका मेलि मुख माहीं । जलधि लाँघि गये अचरज नाहीं ॥ १९

prabhu mudrikā meli mukha māhī, jaladhi lañghi gaye acaraja nāhi

19. It is no surprise that you leapt across the ocean carrying Śrī Rāma’s ring in your mouth.


दुर्गम काज जगत के जेते । सुगम अनुग्रह तुम्हरे तेते ॥ २०

durgama kāja jagat je jete, sugama anugraha tumhare tete

20. All the difficult tasks in the world become easily accomplished through your grace.


राम दुआरे तुम रखवारे । होत न आज्ञा बिन पैसारे ॥ २१

rāma duāre tuma rakhavāre, hota na ājña bin paisāre

21. You guard the gates to Śrī Rāma. None can go in without your permission.


सब सुख लहै तुम्हारी सरना । तुम रक्षक काहु को डरना ॥ २२

saba sukha lahai tumharī saranā, tum rukṣaka kāhu ko daranā

22. Whoever surrenders to you enjoys great happiness. With you as the protector, what is there to be feared?


आपन तेज सम्हारो आपै । तीनों लोक हाँकते काँपे ॥ २३

āpana teja samhāro āpai, tīno loka hañkate kāñpe

23. Only you can control your power, before which all the three worlds tremble.


भूत पिशाच निकट नहिं आवै । महावीर जब नाम सुनावै ॥ २४

bhūta piśāva nikaṭa nahi āvai, mahāvīra jab nāma sunāvai

24. No ghosts and demons can come near a person who chants your name, Mahāvīra.


नाशै रोग हरै सब पीरा । जपत निरन्तर हनुमत वीरा ॥ २५

nāśai roga harai saba pīra, japata nirantara hanumata vīra

25. All diseases are cured and suffering vanishes when your powerful name is chanted constantly.


संकट से हनुमान छुडावै । मन क्रम बचन ध्यान जो लावै ॥ २६

saṅkaṭa se hanumāna chuḍāvai, mana krama bacana dhyāna jo lāvai

26. Whoever remembers Hanumān in thought, word and deed is freed by him from all calamities.


सब पर राम तपस्वी राजा । तिनके काज सकल तुम साजा ॥ २७

saba para rāma tapasvī rājā, tinake kāja sakala tum sājā

27. You accomplish all the tasks of Śrī Rāma, the ascetic king who is supreme.


और मनोरथ जो कोइ लावै । सोइ अमित जीवन फल पावै ॥ २८

aur manoratha jo koi lāvai, soi amita jīvana phala pāvai

28. Whoever comes to you with a dream will have an immeasurably long life.


चारों युग परताप तुम्हारा । है परसिद्ध जगत उजियारा ॥ २९

cāroñ yuga paratāpa tumhāra, hai parasiddha jagata ujiyārā

29. Your glory abides in all the four yugas and your fame radiates throughout the world.


साधु संत के तुम रखवारे । असुर निकंदन राम दुलारे ॥ ३०

sādhu santa ke tuma rakhavāre, asura nikandana rāma dulāre

30. You protect the saints and the sages. You destroy the demons and are beloved of Śrī Rāma.


अष्टसिद्धि नवनिधि के दाता । अस बर दीन जानकी माता ॥ ३१

aṣṭasiddhi navanidhi ke dātā, asa bara dīna jānakī mātā

31. Mother Sītā granted you the boon that you will be the giver of “the eight yogic powers” and “the nine treasures.”


राम रसायन तुम्हरे पासा । सदा रहो रघुपति के दासा ॥ ३२

rāma rasāyana tumhare pāsā, sadā raho raghupati ke dāsā

32. As the eternal servant of Śrī Rāma, you have in you the essence of devotion to Śrī Rāma.


तुम्हरे भजन राम को पावै । जन्म जन्म के दुख बिसरावै ॥ ३३

tumhare bhajana rāma ko pāvai, janma janma ke dukha bisarāvai

33. Śrī Rāma is reached through devotion to you and the sorrows of countless lives vanish.


अन्त काल रघुपति पुर जाई । जहाँ जन्म हरि भक्त कहाई ॥ ३४

anta kāla raghupati pura jāī, jahāñ janma hari bhakta kahāī

34. At the end of life, a person goes to the abode of Śrī Rāma and is known there as a devotee of God.


और देवता चित्त न धरई । हनुमत सेइ सर्व सुख करई ॥ ३५

aur devatā citta na dharaī, hanumata sei sarva sukha karaī

35. You make everything blissful for the person who worships with one-pointed devotion.


संकट हरै मिटै सब पीरा । जो सुमिरै हनुमत बल बीरा ॥ ३६

saṅkaṭa harai miṭai saba pīrā, jo sumirai hanumata bala bīrā

36. All calamities are destroyed and suffering vanishes for one who remembers the power and courage of Hanumān.


जय जय जय हनुमान गोसाई । कृपा करहु गुरुदेव की नाई ॥ ३७

jaya jaya jaya hanumāna gosāī, kṛpā karahu gurudeva kī nāī

37. Glory to Hanumān, the great ascetic. You are my supreme teacher. Shower your grace upon me.


जोह शत बार पाठ कर जोई । छूटहि बन्दि महासुख होई ॥ ३८

joh śata bāra pāṭha kara joī, chūtahi bandi mahāsukha hoī

38. Whoever recites this a hundred times will be freed from bondage and enjoy great happiness.


जो यह पढै हनुमान चालीसा । होय सिद्धि साखी गौरीसा ॥ ३९

jo yaha paḍhai hanumāna cālīsā, hoya siddhi sākhī gaurīsā

39. Whoever reads this Hanumān Cālisā will be enlightened. May Śiva be my witness!


तुलसीदास सदा हरि चेरा । कीजै नाथ हृदय महँ डेरा ॥ ४०

tulasīdāsa sadā hari cerā, kījai nātha hṛdaya mahañ ḍerā

40. Tulasīdās is the eternal servant of God. O Beloved, make my heart your abode.


पवनतनय संकट हरन, मंगल मूरति रूप ।

राम लखन सीता सहित, हृदय बसहु सुरभूप ॥

pavana-tanaya saṅkaṭa harana, maṅgala mūrati rūpa

rāma lakhana sītā sahita, hṛdaya basahu surabhūpa

May Hanumān, who removes all calamities, who has an auspicious form, and who is the king of celestials, dwell in my heart along with Śrī Rāma, Śrī Lakṣmaṇa, and Śrī Sītā.


सियावर रामचन्द्र की जय । पवनसुत हनुमान की जय ।

उमापति महादेव की जय । बोलो रे भाई सब सन्तन की जय ॥

siyāvara rāmacandra kī jay, pavana-suta hanuāmana kī jay

umāpati mahādeva kī jay, bolo re bhāī saba santana kī jay

Glory to Śrī Rāma, the husband of Śrī Sīta, glory to Hanumān, the son of Pavana

Glory to Śiva, the husband of Śrī Umā, glory to all the saints.
