Affirming My Spiritual Identity

Translated by Swami Tyagananda

1

prataḥ smarāmi hṛdi saṁsphurad ātmatattvaṁ

saccita-sukhaṁ paramahaṁsa-gatiṁ turīyam

yat-svapna-jāgara-suṣuptam-avaiti nityaṁ

tad brahma niṣkalam ahaṁ na ca bhūtasaṅghaḥ.

This morning I remember the Ātman, the being-consciousness-bliss absolute, the transcendent Supreme Being shining in my heart. I am not a material object but Brahman, the goal of the highest spiritual seekers, the indivisible and eternal witness of the three states—dream, waking and deep sleep.

prātar-bhajāmi manasā vacasām agamyaṁ

vāco vibhānti nikhilā yad anugraheṇa

yan neti-neti-vacanair nigamā avocuḥ

taṁ deva-devam ajam acyutam āhur agryam.

This morning I meditate on the eternal, imperishable God of gods, who is beyond the reach of thoughts and words, whose grace makes all senses shine, and who is described by the Vedas as “not this, not this.”

prātar-namāmi tamasaḥ param arka-varṇaṁ

pūrṇaṁ sanātana-padaṁ puruṣottam-ākhyam

yasminn-idaṁ jagad-aśeṣam aśeṣamūrtau

rajjvāṁ bhujaṅgama iva pratibhāsitaṁ vai.

This morning I bow down to the eternal, infinite, and effulgent Supreme Being, who is beyond the darkness of ignorance, on whose boundless being this entire world is projected like a snake on a rope.

śloka-trayam idaṁ puṇyaṁ loka-traya-vibhuṣaṇam

prātaḥ-kāle paṭhed yas-tu sa gacchet paramaṁ padam

Every morning whoever chants these three sacred verses, which are the treasures of the three realms, will attain the Supreme Being.
